Long distance relationship

DH has got a job interview half way through the country, and if he gets it he will need to move close to work, during the week at least, and possibly some weekends.
DD1 is at school, so I don't think we can move with DH until the end of the school year, so it's looking like we might have to do long distance for 8 months.
Any ideas how to make it easier for the DCs (and me?)
Obviously it's just a possibility at the moment, but would become reality pretty quickly if he gets the job.

Why can't dd move school before the end of the school year? Is she doing exams? How old is she?

Kids move school all the time.

I just wasn't sure if we would find a place for her at this time of the year! She's only in reception, so should adapt quickly, if we do move.
It would make more financial sense to move together, or at least soon after DH.

I would start enquiring about school waiting lists in the relevant local authority now. You would be better off moving your dc while she's still in reception and friendships are first forming, that way she won't feel as excluded as she might in year one when everyone has established circles of friends. If you are going to move to join him eventually you might as well do it in one stage together and minimize disruption to you all.

Also start checking the schools in the new area and check their Ofsted reports. You don't want to move her to a new school you're not happy with and possibly move her again later on.

Ok, will have at the local authorities. We're not sure where we're moving yet, as he'll probably have to commute.

I've just had a look on the county council website, and found the in year transfer form, but can't find where they say which schools have any free spaces? Or will we need to apply to our 3 preferred ones and hope one of them has a space?

Phone the authority for advice and if you can get a contact name and number for someone helpful, it could prove invaluable. Ask their advice on good schools in the area and explain that you will be relocating and don't know the area. Don't waste too much time on the la website, they're usually pretty shit.

She's young so no reason not to move together.

As others said I definitely think at that age your Little one will be able to adjust I think that's the best case scenario rather than living away from your DH

Ring the schools to see if they have places before you apply. I'm a teacher and have seen kids move around all the time so there should be places. Also, the younger they are, the easier it is for them to settle. I moved my own daughters half way through the academic year in Years 3 and 4, they were absolutely fine. Good luck
