We've been dating for about 6 weeks but have been friends since childhood.

During sex I said "I love you". I actually meant it, I do love him. I've loved him as a friend for many years and now we're more. But TBH my saying that right then was mainly about me getting carried away in the moment than declaring undying devotion.

He murmured "me too"

And now I'm wishing I could take those words back until they really meant something to both of us.

Or does it matter in the end who says it first or when?

aw, it doesn't matter who says it first. Wait until he says it now and don't pressure him to say it. Its much nicer when it comes out of their mouth on its own accord and not as a response.

I'm hoping he will say it of his own accord at some point but I do take heed of the advice not to put any pressure on it. He's quite cautious I think. Has only said it to two people in 30 years of dating whereas I've said it to every partner I've ever had (8) although I have meant it every time.

I think we almost subconsciously have an expectation that if we feel it, and say it, then they will feel and say it back, and when that doesn't happen it feels a bit like an anti climax.

The positive to this is that you've put your cards on the table so he knows how you feel. The ball's in his court now. :-)

I would be mortified. But I don't think it counts if its during sex.

I said it first (just after sex) and his response was "would you like a glass of water". He said that he was about to get one and I took him by surprise. 13 years and a DS later we're doing alright!

Mind you have you really loved 8 partners?! Wow I think I have only loved one person and I don't know if that counts as I was only seventeen.

I said it first to my DP, he was awkward too. Maybe it took him back a little due to the situation, although I think anyone saying I love you in any situation is always awkward the first time it's said even just briefly. Good luck for your future! I'm very happy for you x
