Police body cameras video being abused

Hi. I was beaten up by my ex husband. I called police and the video of me telling police what happened to me while I cried. Was recorded .
In video I'm showing police that I have no bruises by lifting up my shirt.
Some how my ex husband has the video now and he is showing it around to friends and family.

My question is whether there are any data protection laws. And how can I stop him showing that ambaressing video around.

I'm so sorry that you are going through this. Your ex-h is a poor excuse for a human being, and any people with a shred of decency who he shows the video to will not be laughing at you: they will be thinking that he is an ass. Both for what he did to you, and for gloating about it after. So please don't you feel embarrassed: he is embarrassing himself.

I'm sorry that I don't have answers about data protection. Although it is worth telling the police that he is doing this; they will likely want to have a word with him about that too.

Are you sure it's the police video? Or any video at all? People can make these things up you know...

If it is the police video you need to make an immediate complaint, and ask them to investigate and take action.

Tbh I'd be surprised if it was the actual police footage, although it would actually be a lot easier to deal with if it was, as there's very rigorous rules about handling and access to police interview footage... that someone in the police must have broken.

You shouldn't have to be dealing with this, whoever and however the footage has got to your ex.

Where were you when you were speaking to the police, at the station or at home?

Is there any chance he set up a separate camera in your home and it wasn't the police?

Hi, I presume from your part that your ex was charged. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Unfortunately he will be entitled to a copy of the video under the Criminal Procedures and Investigations Act 1996 which states that he must be provided with a copy of all the evidence in the car as part of 'disclosure'.
If you are braless in the video then in my opinion as a police disclosure officer, the video should have been edited to hide your breasts as a matter of decency. If you are wearing a bra then sadly it would be classed as you being clothed and would be served in its unaltered state.
The video is very important as it's your evidence of 'first disclosure' - i.e. your first account of what happened.
Once again, I'm so sorry, things like this are shit

So an abusive man can get and keep a film of his victim at their most vulnerable and desperate?

They can get their rocks off by seeing the damage they've done and the semi-naked body of their victim?

It's like they are being given more power to hurt and abuse by the 'system' itself.

I'm utterly horrified and very glad that this isn't something well known as it would be a massive barrier to anyone disclosing abuse or asking for help.

Generally it's provided to the defence solicitor but if they have no solicitor or the solicitor provides a copy to their client there's nothing we can do. It's part of common a law and has been for 20 years...

Surely something can be done about the video being shared around, though? His having the video makes sense, but can he use it in any way he pleases?

He doesn't get the right to show it around tho, I am sure. I would complain to the police and get some legal advice. If it's part of an ongoing investigation or court case, surely showing it around isn't permitted? And if the case is over, surely it would start to fall under some protections like the revenge porn laws or harassment of some kind?

I've heard of people in prison passing around the evidence statements relating to their convictions, for the enjoyment of other prisoners. I understand their right to see the evidence , but not to keep a copy.

Sadly if the video isn't obscene he can show it to who he likes. He is entitled to a copy. Yes the footage is downloaded to a computer where it is stored but copies are made for the defence and prosecution if it forms evidence in the case.
If it had been the op's statement that he had received he again could let someone read it.
If the op is actually topless on the video it could in theory be considered under the revenge open laws if he's showing the world. If it's family members etc though who he is discussing the case with and seeking advice then it may be more difficult to prove. Again, I'm sorry Op

They can keep a copy if it is for the preparation of their case. Normally things like this would be sent to the defence and viewed at the solicitors office. It's either a solicitor with few morals (although not illegal) or he's not got a solicitor.

How do you know this? If it's something concrete like on FB, make sure sure you screenshot/record. It could be useful to you.

I know it's a really late reply. I just wanted you to know, I really appreciated the reply. For the last 4 years, I was very busy, building my life, buying things for house, shifting jobs and most importantly making sure my 10 year old gets all the support his mom can provide for his well being.
