What is it with OLD and monitoring Whatsapp?

I've met a few guys online who then want to Whatsapp. No prob. Happy to (but it does reveal my identity). But a lot of people chatting in dating threads here talk about the fact the guy didnt reply despite being on Whatsapp. How can you tell? I respond when I notice a message but have no idea if people are on it or off it (including me). Can someone explain? Be kind I'm old. And sometimes OLD.

It's the ticks, two blue ones mean that the person has seen the message.

Two grey is delivered but not read.
One grey tick, er I dunno.

There's two grey check marks if they turn blue it mean the person saw you message.

If it's just one check mark it means message is not delivered

Is possible to go anonymous, when the ticks thing doesn't work.

You also can't see when anonymous person was last active (or [s] he you).

You can swipe left on your sent message and see what time it was read, unless they have turned off those notifications. Also at the top it says the last time someone was on whatsapp.

Oh yes - I've seen the two ticks. I just thought it meant it had been delivered. Some people talk about knowing how long someone was up or awake and I didnt understand how they knew or if they could tell it had been seen. Sorry. Being dumb.

At the top it says 'last seen at...' (although you can switch that feature off)

The ticks are NOT reliable. They work 99% of the time but sometime are bullshit. For example when the last logged in time is before you sent a message but it still shows as read.

They will add you on what's app so can look at your pic. Then maybe not reply. Also it a stalker way of knowing if your getting a message. Unlike a text you could not reply and say you didn't have your phone.

I don't connect mine to Facebook either. Should be in settings, account, privacy and then 'last seen' either turn to nobody or just contacts saved in your phone.

I find it doesbt just stop driving yourself mad but also clingy men can use it to annoy you

It still shows if you are online but it doesn't say when you are last seen and also I turned off read reciepts. I don't care enough about stalking people to know these things and rather use my intuition to guide me than online texting etiquette

God, that would do my head in … or rather that of my obsessive personality Blush. My phone is a brick and doesn't have internet! It's embarrassing when guys ask me to whatsapp, but I just lie and say that I'm "between phones".

Yes and so you can send pictures etc for the cost of data only and it's never to be found on a bill.

I like it because of the group chat function. I have a large group of friends and the chat has been running for at least 2 years now

I travel abroad a lot for work and have both work and personal phones - don't want to use mine abroad. Also not unusual for one to go out of battery. I use whatsapp because I can have the same convo across two phones.

Yup and also because apps like Tinder are rubbish for actual messaging!

If you are going to use WA for OLD then make sure your phone number is not linked to your FB account. Mine was until some guy I met on PoF casually dropped in "oh, I found you on FB and I've given you a good virtual stalking!" Shock I'm fairly sure he meant no harm and my FB privacy settings are high anyway but it was enough to freak me out and take my number off FB. On the flipside though, it can be very useful to stalk potential dates and make sure they are who they say they are so I am always annoyed when other people are as careful as me! Grin

In general though, probably the least you know about WA and its various settings the better. I have driven myself mad with read receipts and last seen in past. Seriously, it's better off not knowing...

That isnt bullshit and it is till reliable. I have had it happen to me.
When you get a read time that is later than the last seen time stamp, all that means, is that the person didnt have data connection when they read it and were offline.

For example, a friend pointed mine out to me. It was reading as me having read the message 30 minutes after I was last online. I was on the tube. I pulled my phone out, saw I had a message and read that message in the tunnel without data connection at the time.

Both were entirely accurate. The last seen stamp was when I was last online with a data or wifi connection. The read time was when I actually read the message although I had no active connection at the time.

I don't use it for cheating either ! But it's a well known fact that some people use it because it's untraceable.
