Drug addicted son

My son broke up with his girlfriend a few months ago. Since then he has been losing himself in a range of substances including weed, alcohol and prescription drugs such as Tramadol which he buys from a dealer. His doctor has prescribed anti depressants which he also takes. Last week he had a brief seizure which scared him and he has been told not to drive until he has seen a specialist however he does not seem able to commit to staying away from drugs although he says he won't take any more pills. He is due to start a new job in a couple of weeks but I am worried he won't manage it due to his drug taking. He is seeing a counsellor who thinks he has self esteem issues. We are supporting him but are afraid of what he might do especially if he is on his own for any length of time. He is 24.

for you. I've seen my ex have a horrible seizure that hospitalised him after a high dose tramadol and cocaine binge and it was terrifying. Tramadols notorious for it.

I'm really sorry but I wouldn't take his word on staying away from pills. How longs he been taking them? They are opiates so very addictive and he's only going to say what he thinks you want to hear.

I'd really recommend specific drug and alcohol counseling for him. In my experience it covers the personal reasons for using and drinking so is like normal counseling in way. It helped me personally realise why I was using/drinking in the first place and tackle that.

Sadly you can't make him do anything though. He's got to make that choice for himself.

Thanks for your reply. He's been taking pills for around 4 months usually at weekends or occasionally in the evening. It got worse in the last 2 months. I agree he needs to see a specific drugs counsellor but as you say, I can't make him do anything he has to want to.
