If he realizes how close I am to leaving him, he wouldn't be such an arse.

Yeah, for a few weeks, until you are back in your place. And then he will be an arse again.

Empty threats won't change him.

Why don't you just leave him? Maybe he wants to end it and doesn't have the guts himself.
