Can a man and woman ever just be friends?

In my limited experience, most men will only bother with girls (even in a friendship way) if they find them attractive. I find that women are more inclined to see men as "just friends" though. Anyone agree?

I agree with you OP that it seems to be easier, or at least more common, for women to be able to maintain a friendship with someone of the opposite sex - or, I should say, of the sex they're normally attracted to - without sexual attraction interfering.

The thing is, I have several close women friends, and I am attracted to most of them to some extent, but I'm simply never going to do anything about it. I like the attraction, there's sometimes a bit of flirting, a few wisecracks, but it's not going any further because a) I've made THAT mistake once before and b) I'd lose a brilliant friendship. I'm also not quite vain enough. So, yeah it can work but each has to have their head screwed on.
