Which ones are worth trying? I've been single for ages and have finally realised I need to be pro active. I've just turned fifty, if that makes a difference to which sites may be more suitable. Anyone had any luck with finding a partner this way?

I've found eharmony pretty good if you are looking for someone long term. That's where I met my DH and had two fairly decent relationships with others on there before meeting DH. The signing up process is long winded but all worth it in the end as you have so much in common with your matches. Good luck!

Despite the fact that there are statistics banded about that the majority of people who get married these days met online, I only know of two couples who are together (one married, one not) through online dating. I know plenty of men and women who had plenty of first and second dates but nothing beyond that. I know plenty of men and women who have never had anything that lasted beyond three months. I know of many men and women who had no more than six dates in three years of trying all the different sites. Most people I know (including me) who used it for a decent period of time have said they'd not use it again.

In other words, it is a huge numbers game, with loads of factors coming into play - where you live, for example.

It's an additional tool, if you like, to try and meet people, but it can also seriously damage your self esteem, make you think that all men are only after sex, all sorts of things. But yes, some people have a great time and some people get together and have a happy ending.

Go in with no expectations is probably the best bet.

A few of my friends are in long term relationships with people they have met OLD. Match seems to be the most commonly used among my peers. It worked for me too! After 2 short term relationships with nice men I have now met an amazing partner I would never have met in real life. As PP poster says it does depend on your part of the country. I'm in my 50s if that helps.
