Is just walking away a good move?

Marriage breaks down, DH self employed, virtually paid off mortgage. Mum full time SAH so he "owns" family home. she wants to leave with 2 DCs leaving him in family home whilst she rents somewhere much smaller just to end the relationship and start afresh.
Is this a good move?

Except he doesn't "own" the house, it's a joint asset regardless of who paid the mortgage - the fact that the wife is SAH has enabled him to work. That's how the lawyers see it. I think legal advice is needed - and they usually advise to absolutely not leave the family home.
