Experience with copper coil

Has anyone had a bad experience with the copper coil? DW has been on her time of the month for over two weeks and we think it might be related.

Are you sure it's the copper coil and not the mirena?

I had the copper coil for over 2 years, the first 3 periods where heavier and more painful but after that, I couldn't fault it!

I had a bad experience. My periods were endless and very very heavy. It settled a bit eventually but it was never great. I had it taken out after 3 long years

It has changes my periods different days are heavier than before but overall no worse. Definitely more discharge all the time. The hormonal alternatives play havoc with my libido.

I was told that it can make periods heavier and more painful for first 6 months, and then it should settle down.

I've found mine to be very heavy and longer (usually lasts a week), but definitely better than the alternatives.

I've had mine since last May. The first 3 periods were heavier, especially the second but now they are pretty much the same as they were before

She should be seen if she is concern. It may cause her period heavier but two weeks is a little too long.

Did she just have a baby? If so, then I say it is normal because it lasted me a month after birth.

I've had mine for three months or so, definitely heavier periods with a few days of spotting either side but this last ones been more manageable so fingers crossed they're calming down a bit!! Overall pretty happy with it as along tern Form of contraception Grin

I have had it nearly 3 years now it actually helped my pain. I haven't had any bad experiences with it its a good contraceptive.

I hated the coil. It made me bleed almost constantly.

I have a copper coil, and it's been fine.

My periods are no heavier overall, what I find is that it's heavier on the initial day or two whereas previously it had been a more steady flow over the period.

I've had the iud 6 years, on my 2nd. My periods are heavier but not much longer, 7 days. 2 weeks is a long time. I love it, hated hormonal contraception.

Everyone woman is different: I adore my copper coil, it causes me zero problems, but I know it does for some other people.

Meanwhile, the first hormonal pill I tried made me bleed for an entire fucking month, while other women did very well on it.

Your DW should not hesitate to switch if the coil isn't suiting her. However, since getting it in and out is such a painful faff involving a trip to the gyno's, I would encourage her to keep it for a handful of months to see if it settles down.

The coil (nonhormonal) made my periods only slightly heavier and noticeably more painful.But far better than hormonal options. However, my aunt suffered very badly with it and found hormonal options perfect. I suggest returning to the GP.

I didn't know copper coils were still available - I was only given the mirena as an option but it has literally transformed my life. I couldn't take the pill as it affected me physically and mentally but the mirena has completely stopped my periods. Your dw may want to try if she's having issues? My periods before were horrific, bleeding through a super plus tampon and night time pad within an hour for the first three days.

gaggiagirl no it didnt work. We found out that we were expecting DD(2) when I was 18 weeks pregnant.

It gave me agonising periods. And I'm not a whinger usually. I couldn't move for vack pain. 3 months of that and I had it out. Everything immediately went back to normal.

I've had two copper coils with no problems, and one which caused me to bleed non stop for almost a month until I had it taken out.

I think a lot of it has to do with the skill of the person putting it in.

Strawberry, yes they are still available. I guess they don't offer 8th much because it last longer and more expensive and most women plan to have a baby before then
