iPhone tracking by abusive ex?

pod3030 · 18/01/2015 00:22

Hoping some techies around adjust been shaken up. Fled v abusive ex with dd and he's taking me to court about contact. When I lived at the family home my phone etc was synced with that computer. Now in new home, new computer iCloud on, all synced up. New phone with siri, it uses his name when starting up. I feel scared

It's ok, Siri is preset with a name, it can be changed. It does not mean that he had tracked you. Have you changed your password? If not do that first. Then open a new gmail account and change the email used by your Apple account. Also phone number. Turn off location services on your phone - it will be under settings. It may already be off.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 18/01/2015 00:28

Siri calls me 'Your Majesty' on all my apple items. I change my password regularly. It stays the same.

pod3030 · 18/01/2015 00:32

*ive just
I've never used Siri before. Why would it use his name? Feel sick, I can't have him find us/ get my info.

Check 'handoff and suggested apps' make sure its switched off.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 18/01/2015 00:33

He probably programmed it when you shared the account.

SavoyCabbage · 18/01/2015 00:35

I have accidently changed my bane they Siri calls me without noticing I have done it before.

So this new iCloud has nothing to do with your ex? As people who share iClouds can use find my phone to see the location of all TV devices on that cloud.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 18/01/2015 00:37

I think you can also de register computers - check on your PC - I'll go look it up.

pod3030 · 18/01/2015 00:37

Thanks, location services off, will change email & had already changed password. Bit of a shivery shock seeing and hearing his name. Can't see how it can be pre set to him

So to clarify, if you say to Siri 'good morning Siri' Siri is replying 'good morning john'

Also if you do not have the Find my iPhone app on your PC, he cannot track you.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 18/01/2015 00:41

Iphone, not PC

FeckTheMagicDragon · 18/01/2015 00:44

I'm also sorry you are going through this, meant to say that earlier but thought you needed some practical info first :)

FeckTheMagicDragon · 18/01/2015 00:52

Also, if you want to change it, start up Siri and say 'Siri call me Pod'

pod3030 · 18/01/2015 01:01

Thank you , will investigate further in the morning as dd has just crawled into bed with me. Yes, when I switched Siri on it said his full name

No wonder you are freaked out! Can you get to an Apple Store for advice from a 'genius'?

Shhhhhhhh · 18/01/2015 02:01

NCed for this.

I was advised by my support worker in a similar situation to get an old fashioned "unsmart" phone for safety/privacy reasons.

I didn't want to give up my iphone so I can sympathise if you don't. You could change your normal number to PAYG sim and put it in an old fashioned basic phone (just for him) then get a new number for your iphone. Or just change number. Your phone company should help you with number changes, even if have a contract. You can then get help from an Apple store to reset everything (a factory reset will get rid of any tracking software he might have installed) and save what you need to a new Apple ID, register to a new computer, and transfer stuff across.

Shhhhhhhh · 18/01/2015 02:04

When I say tracking software, I mean the kind of spyware you can install other than just the normal track my iphone setting. Just in case...

LennyCrabsticks · 18/01/2015 02:05

It said his full name? Name and surname?

BoredChurch · 18/01/2015 02:12

Just turn off location services.

Or, if you can't do thst, turn off the wifi or 3G and just use it as an old fashioned phone for the time being.

flyingbunnies · 18/01/2015 02:25

You can install third party spyware, but he would have needed to have your phone to install it. The best known of these softwares is probably Flexispy. This link explains how it would be installed: www.flexispy.com/en/features/easy-install-flexispy.htm

I don't want to frighten you, but I recommend an immediate factory reset, or a new phone entirely.

Joysmum · 18/01/2015 08:47

Apple are absolutely fantastic. Go into your nearest Apple Store to make an appointment and let them sort it out for you and put your mind at rest Smile

warysara · 18/01/2015 12:31

You can back up your contacts and then completely wipe the phone. Make sure you look at 'Find Friends' and that you are sharing your location with jus those that you wish (or at all).

It is quite hard to install spyware on a non jailbroken phone, so doing the above is just for your peace of mind

CheersMedea · 18/01/2015 13:07

Also if you do not have the Find my iPhone app on your PC, he cannot track you.

I don't think this is strictly correct. There are independent websites that you can register with that will track your phone/SIM. Most of them you need to have the phone with you to confirm you "accept" tracking but if you have access to the person's phone, it's not that difficult.

pod3030 · 18/01/2015 22:10

Gosh thanks all, just had chance to catch up. Right, will do a reset, and I'm popping in to apple store for advice too- thanks so much for the advice ( yes his full name came on Siri, which I've never had up til now but he always has the latest iPhone ) phew!
