How about realising that the reason they say it is to make you feel worthless, as that's the only way they get to stay in any sort of relationship.

Anyone who really is 'the best', doesn't need to say it as they don't think it - because they just 'are'. And that goes with a huge dose of self-reflection and awareness that this would be a horrible thing to say to anyone.

Did you dump him right before he said this? If so, it's pretty normal for someone to express 'your loss' type sentiments. If he said it when he dumped you of if he just said it out of nowhere the word you're looking for is 'conceit'. Conceited people are everywhere....

During a holiday just before H left me for his new friend, we took the DC out for dinner. Usual blah blah blah arguing and then he stood up, with arms outstretched and screamed "You'll never find anyone better than me!" and stormed out.

The whole restaurant was silent and then a lone voice piped up "What a dick" and started laughing and clapping. Others joined in :). Poor DC were given a free giant knickerbocker glory and me a glass of wine.

Horrible at the time but I look back and smirk. Happily DC mention the icecream more than the row.

In my defence he had knobbed me about for ages and couldn't decide what he wanted. So I said to him that when he is old and looks back on his life he will always regret letting me go.

As it turned out I'm now very happy with DP and DS and he periodically messages me to tell me he misses me. So I assume I could end up being correct. He did me a huge favour though.

I am still very confused about that man since he dumped me in 2008. He was seeing a French woman behind my back all along and he was separated from his wife. I was being used, he said he wanted me to make up my mind about us but he had someone already and i knew he wasn't serious when he said it. Very odd.mixed messages but i kept my dignity and pride.
