dp has been separated from his wife for about 14 years ex was going to divorce him a year or so after we got together but she never did
anyway dp has finally decided to divorce her and tracked down her sister to send the papers but google seems to suggest its going to cost us around £420 that we really can't afford with 3 children and it seems we are over the threshold for help

Many solicitors will allow you to pay in instalments, although you may have to pay a couple of months' worth in advance before anything happens. But if you've waited 14 years, a few months isn't going to make any difference.

You can get quickie cheap divorces online. I wouldn't recommend it ordinarily, but if they've been split that long and have no joint financial issues, that may be a good route.

From your POV I think this would be money well spent. You have precious little rights to your joint assets with your DP should anything happen to him while he remains married to another.

We went to local court, got the papers, filled in ourselves for about £420, we split the cost 50/50

No need for a solicitor

Divorce took about four months to come through, should have been quicker but they lost some of the returned paperwork

Deffo get the divorce ASAP, if anything happening she is entitled

Good luck.
