My partner is on a dating site/app. He says it's a dodgy site that signs you up itself!!!??

I stumbled on this a few days ago and have been mulling it over.

Basically I noticed that my partners iphone kept asking for a password to his old email address. Having had trust issues before between us I went to this old email address and signed in with his usual password. In there was a number of emails from a dating thing called Badoo. Most of them were stuff like "Kelly wants to get to know you!" or "4 new hot members in your area!". So giving the benefit of the doubt I assumed it was just general spam ... went further back into the account and an email saying "welcome to badoo!" with some log in details.

I logged into the app and found that his username is a combination of his middle name and his age. He never uses his middle name. NEVER. So when he told me that these details must have been pulled from something else he was using I couldn't help but smell a bit of bullshit.

No photo on there and no other details - no messages send and none opened so I can say he has been actively using it but HE must have signed up to it, right?

Or does Baddoo have form for creating false accounts using info it pulls from elsewhere?

That's the best excuse I've heard so far! Of course he signed up for it

It's a dating site and no I doubt very much they set up accounts unbeknown to the users, yes he signed up, what he is using it for is pretty obvious no?

Liar.

Badoo is a scammy site which is (I think) buying details of users from other sites so I could believe that he had emails sent to him like he did as it happened to me at some point in the past.
But to log and with a valid password that you were able to guess - that is something I wouldn't believe can happen.

Only1scoop · 09/10/2014 15:57

Op I must say dp had a random 'spam' type email from this company saying 'Jon wants to chat' and when you clicked on it asked for your joining details to sign you up....

I googled it and found it is a site known for spamming address books of existing users....

Seems strange that an actual account exists for him though....

Renee3rdDan · 09/10/2014 15:57

The password was in the email and it was just a load of jumbled up letters which I copied and pasted into the log in page.

It was his email address that I guess the password to.

Don't get me wrong, if he username was just his first name and year of birth or whatever I'd be more inclined to believe him but they used his middle name, a name which not only is it rare and no way could be a co-incidence but its a name he never uses so where would they have got those details from?

Also had our home town as the location.

Ahhh.... that old chestnut eh!?

FelicityGubbins · 09/10/2014 16:07

Sounds like he has fallen for a spam site, however as he knew to use a different name as a login, I would probably scour dating sites/ punter sites for the same username, as creatures of habit often have the same username for lots of different sites

Meerka · 09/10/2014 16:14

It's just possible that this disreputatable site got his details from some leak a while ago. For instance, official sites / organisations that would legitimately have his full name (eg banks) sometimes do get hacked / have the odd person who sells rafts of peoples' details on. They don't like to advertise it but it does happen now and then.

But yes, worth having a look around other sites. Have there ever been any other iffy signs? you mentoined trust issues a while ago. Has it been a long time since any trouble?

Worksallhours · 09/10/2014 16:25

Ooooh! This happened to me about two months ago.

I suddenly started getting these emails from a dating site (a fairly well-known one, I think) and I have never set up an account on it.

When I had a look, my supposed "profile" was bare but I think it might have had my birth date (day and month).

What made me a bit weirded out is that the login name was a nickname that some of my very close friends used to use (when we were ahem 'pon the herb in college), so I wondered whether someone had set up a fake account in my name for some reason.

I told my DH straight away, as I didn't want him to accidentally see any emails and have a meltdown.

I honestly don't know about this app, but I've heard many times from other people that some dating apps do sign people's FB friends up pretty much unwittingly with some consent box or opt-out which not everyone unchecks because some apps get access to FB friends. So yes you get people on some of those sites via their FB profiles. Best way to check they intentionally signed up might be to see if they wrote anything for the dating profile. If it's blank or just the basics, could be an auto sign up.

Ruddygreattiger2016 · 21/07/2017 09:11

Ive never had a random account set up in my name complete with log in detail confirmation emails etc. Jeez his excuses are laughable but you seem desperate to believe him. Good luck op.

chips4teaplease · 21/07/2017 09:13

I can see his nose growing from here.

Lallypopstick · 21/07/2017 09:21

Zombie thread.

stompingfairy · 28/01/2020 11:11

I’ve found emails from badoo to my partner saying he’s hidden his account, then others saying girls are waiting to chat and then back to “account has been hidden” emails again, does he have to sign back in to unhide his account? Or does it do this automatically?
I will bring this up with him but I want my facts straight first
Thanks
