When does a boyfriend become a partner?

When does someone go from BF to DP?

I am dating someone - I would call him a boyfriend, he calls himself my boyfriend but my friend just called him my partner.

I don't think someone I have been dating for 3 months and hasn't met my kids is a partner and it made me think - when does someone become a partner from a boyfriend/girlfriend?

I've called my boyfriend my partner for ages! We've been together four years, live together and we're 28 and 34 "boyfriend"/"girlfriend" to me sound silly. We've both been married as well, when we got together the last time I'd had a "boyfriend" was when I was 18!
