Male friend told me I smell good - was this weird?

When greeting a long-time male friend with a cuddle and kiss he said I smelled good. I was like, great, and didnt think any more, but a (girl) friend I mentioned it to in passing seemed to think it was weird and my dp should be jealous.

Not quite sure what to make of it now!!!

Nothing, it was a simple compliment, you must have been wearing a nice scent.

PlumpPartridge · 08/08/2014 14:23

Depends on how he said it, really!

If he lingered to smell a bit more, then yes it was a bit odd. If it was a simple 'Mmm, yummers' and then detach, you're ok Grin

LiberalLibertines · 08/08/2014 14:25

Oh ffs, I say this to people all the time, of both sexes, does she fancy him?

PlantsAndFlowers · 08/08/2014 14:28

Depends - if he was taking about artificial scent such as perfume/shampoo/body lotion etc. then that's fine. If he was referring to your natural musk, then not so much.

Flexibilityisquay · 08/08/2014 14:31

Sounds like quite a normal thing to say to me.

Dirtybadger · 08/08/2014 14:33

Um, just a compliment. Some people just say nice things! Don't worry about it.

Fudgeface123 · 08/08/2014 14:34

Jeez, yes your dp should totally be jealous...really??? FFS cant you saw anything these days for fear of it being taken completely out of context. Sounds like you and your friend have a bit of growing up to do

RuncibleSpoonandaRing · 08/08/2014 14:36

I did use to date him, if that makes any difference, was a while back. That's probably why I'm a bit sensitive. I was wearing perfume, same as normal.

I say it to male and female friends all the time. In fact, last weekend DH friend was staying and when he arrived we hugged and I said to him " Ooh you smell lovely"
Neither of us thought any more about it.

mosaicone · 08/08/2014 14:36

Crikey, I wouldnt want my dp to be jealous of that - I would definitely and do definitely tell any male or female friend if they smell lovely, its a compliment, why wouldnt you?!?!?!
I would also tell them if they stank too

RuncibleSpoonandaRing · 08/08/2014 14:37

Fudge the girlfriend is someone who doesn't think you should be friends with men, or exes. I don't normally listen, but wasn't sure about this one.

Normal compliment. Your female friend is wrong on more than one count.

MaliceInWonderland78 · 08/08/2014 14:39

If he's a dwarf/midget, it's defnitiely weird!

Assuming he's not, it's probably not that strange.

I often find that women smell nice. Some of my wife's perfumes actually send me into sneezing fits. Every so often, I'll pass a woman in the street who smells absolutley divine. I should be able to stop her and say: "You smell really nice (or your perfume smells really nice), what is that scent called?"

I never do though, for fear of being construed as "that guy"

It's a shame really.

Friedbrain · 08/08/2014 14:43

Seriously....

Come on....

He payed you a complement, that's what friends do

UriGeller · 08/08/2014 14:43

What perfume was it?

I do this with my oldest male friends, "god you smell nice/have you been working out/got a new haircut/you need a shave" sort of thing. Its just friendly.

Jux · 08/08/2014 14:46

Your female friend is an idiot.

PuppyMonkey · 08/08/2014 14:51

Your friend is a twit and IMHO the chap who said this to you wbu too as he should have said: "you smell nice" not "you smell good'. Wink

HumblePieMonster · 08/08/2014 15:04

its not weird its nice and normal. people with the right chemistry, or even with the right person, smell good to us.

I just remembered then, as I wrote, how nice my mum smelled to me when I was young (and I rarely have a good word to say about her, so its worth noting. I also found her face very pleasant)
