I'm having probs with my marriage atm...my docs had referred me to relate..... But I've had depression for many years and i want to know why and get to the bottom of it as there had been 2 suicides on my mums side in 9 yrs. I dont feel suicidal and had never. can i have relate counselling and also my own personal counselling at the same time? Thanks

I am sure that you can bet that your issues are connected, so they would be almost certainly dealt with by the same counsellor at the same time. It would also surely help your spouse to know more about your personal issues. Speak to relate and ask them.

Well that's what i dont know about my personal issues as ive had up and down's in my life for many years...maybe it goes further back than 20 yrs....i really don't know so would relate able to help me on the personal issues you reckon?

Why have you been referred to relate? IME the counsellors at Relate tend not to be very well qualified in dealing with complicated mental health issues, they focus more on relationship problems and ongoing life difficulties.

I agree. I think you need separate counsellors but not sure if it's wise to do both at same time.

Ive decided to have my depression sorted first before the marriage counselling as that's seems like in order. As the depression is causing my probs in my marriage.
