I admit to being totally clueless about these things. But my relationship is over and I guess the next logical step is to get a divorce. Where to start?

Are you living apart ? There are solicitors who will give you a 30 minute free consultation or they will do fixed price. It will depend on how complicated things are regarding children/finance etc. There is plenty of information on www.gov.uk/divorce/overview hope that helps.

Yes, we're living apart.

Thank you for all the help.

Have you got children? I did it all myself without a solicitor (except for a bit of paperwork WRT the seperation) but I didn't have children and it was very amicable (for the most part).

Just went down to the Court and got the papers there.

Separation...

Yes we have children, four, but he will only be seeing them through a contact centre.

Does it matter that we've been married less than a year?

Yes, it does. Get some legal advice if you can.

Also check out

www.gov.uk/divorce

which explains the basic process.

Sorry about your situation.
