The first thing she should do is go see a Solicitor - she might be entitled to Legal Aid or get a free initial interview. They will probably (hopefully) recommend they go to mediation and he will hopefully see sense - have they got children?

There are so many different answers, depending on individual circumstances. Sorry to be so vague but I'd hate to give false hope.
