Would anybody be able to tell me how I find a training psychotherapist so I can pay less?

That's it really, I know how to find £50 an hour weekly therapists but I'm not sure how I would find a training PT (I'm a student)

If you are a student a trained counsellor would normally only charge you a rate for being unwaged. Depending on your age the YMCA will see you for free up to the age of 25.

A trainee counsellor will not be working for themselves as they are not allowed to charge you as per the BACP ethical guide lines. You could try phoning some larger practices who have a few counsellors on their books and specificly (sp) ask for a trainee to keep down cost.

Scroll down to the bit about reduced fee treatment for those on a low income. They may also be able to pint you to other reputable training instituitions who offer lower cost therapy (with trainees who are closely supervised).

If you contact the Institute for family therapy they did used to offer a service for agreeing to be seen by a therapist in training who is under the supervision of qualified practitioners. Check with them and see what they offer now.

Thanks for all this advice, I don't think I can get through this year at uni without psychotherapy, the pressure tends to surface my past and I don't want to underachieve just because I can't afford therapy.

I did a 6 week course and so qualified for counselling through the college. In fact, I ended up with an almost qualified counselor as the qualified one had just left, but my lady was just fabulous and has sorted my jumbled head out for/with me after almost 30 years of crap clouding and wrecking my life!

And it was free!!!

just ring up some counselling centres near you and ask if they have any therapists who offer low cost therapy. this will usually be a trainee

Thanks yes I am happy to do that, I find psychotherapy better than experiences I've had with counselling so Ill look forward to finding someone in the next few weeks.
