Does anyone know?
My friend thinks her iphone 4 has been bugged because someone quotes parts of her phone conversations back to her .She is really freaked out about it. I thought MN experts might know

Yes you can, she needs to search for cydia on the phone

ImperialBlether · 05/08/2013 11:28

That is really awful, Selba. Is it her boyfriend/husband?

lonelywife · 05/08/2013 11:50

I would take it into an apple shop and get them to wipe it clean then she can just download all of her own stuff back onto it. They might be able to identify any unknown apps running on it too.

Selba · 05/08/2013 12:31

Thanks all.
It's her ex boyfriend.
what is cydia?

A bugging app.

There are a few available, though.

She really needs to take it to Apple. They will be able to completely clear it for her, so that she can be sure that it's clean and unbugged.

Then she needs to be very careful about who has access to her phone.

Selba · 05/08/2013 12:34

Thanks again Caja ;really, will apple do that for her? Any idea what they charge? will she lose all her music files?

Connect it to the computer and do a full factory reset and restart as a new phone, that's what apple will do but make sure she doesn't restore all the old apps contacts etc because it will be hidden within them

Isetan · 05/08/2013 13:12

If she has already synced it with her computer then the program could also be on her computer. Consult Apple and Google (some of the Apple geniuses are far from it) because you could inadvertingly re-sync the offending app once you restored to factory settings.

Cydia is to do with jail breaking an iPhone. I agree with going to apple store and asking them.

CajaDeLaMemoria · 05/08/2013 16:05

Apple are very unlikely to charge. It's always been free when I've gone in! They'll either back her files up or show her how to do it, too, so she won't lost anything.

If she syncs it with her own computer, she could redownload Cydia onto it, or any other dodgy apps. It's best that Apple help her.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cydia

Cydia enables other, non apple approved apps to run on a phone, it is not a bugging app.

cellphonebuggingsoftware.com/iphone-bugging-software/

shows a couple of options for eavesdropping.

Mosman · 06/08/2013 01:25

Once cydia is in the phone the harder to find bug can be installed, hence finding cydia would be the first step in my experience.

Isetan · 06/08/2013 03:01

Type Cydia into spotlight (search function) if it turns up then her phone has been jailbroken. If she isn't iPhone savvy tell her to go Apple and plead her case (Apple do not like jailbroken iPhones, so voicing her suspicions about nasty Ex should help). Restoring to factory settings on a jailbroken phone is trickier and will require additional software, Google "restore jaibroken {iPhone type} to factory settings" for specific instructions.
