my ex couldnt get a bank account when we were first together so i let him use my old account which is in my maiden name, now we have split i not want him to continue to use the account in my name can i have it changed into his name?

I think the bank would insist on closing that account and opening a new one in his name. You really should close it down because bank current accounts show on credit reports etc and there is no way if he ran up a huge overdraft on it that you would be able to say the debt wasn't yours since it would be in your name.

I would go to the bank and speak to them about the process. They would need to run credit and KYC/AML checks on him (know your customer/anti-money laundering) for account opening to ensure they are complying with certain regulatory requirements.

If you desperately wanted to keep the same physical account you may be able to add his name to make it a joint account and then sign to take yours off...

Tell him you're going to close the account and that he has to open his own. Presumably you get all the statements? Is is in credit?

The ban will not do that. You must close it asap, you are liable entirely for that account. So overdraft, charges, bounced dds.

ive told him i'll give him another week to sort his own out then im closing the account, ive already given him 2 weeks i will tell the bank to transfer any money in there to my account then give it to him. Luckily there is only £100 over draft limit on it.

Haunted - we were told that accounts couldn't be changed from joint to single when we divorced, had to close joint current account and joint savings accounts and open new ones.

My exH took on our old joint account as his single one Squirrelz I just had to sign to take my name off it. That was 18 months ago - but I agree with those saying just close it! Never let anyone else use an account in your name

I had my name taken off the joint account - also about 18m ago. We just had to go into bank and sign to say we both agreed to it.
