DH found a strange pair of pants in his drawer this morning and now he thinks I'm having an affair!

He's a sad sad man . When would I have time to have an affair what with work and two 4 year olds. And if I was having an affair why would my lover go home without his pants . It is a bit of a mystery as to how they got there, so can slightly see things from his side, but even so!

When he comes home, tell him you will understand if he admits that he is gay and they are HIS lovers pants

I bet he goes to a gym/fottie or something and picked up somebody elses in the changing room!

or tell him you're a cross-dresser and that they're actually yours.

Two entirely rational suggestions in response to a completely sensible assertion from your dh.
My money is on the 4 year olds raiding washing lines while you are out at work sandyballs

He does go to a gym, but doesn't shower there (bit shy ).

It doesn't help that last year he went away for the weekend and came home to find a strange pair of socks in his drawer. He still goes on about that .

Like the gay lover suggestion, I'll mention that.
