she thinks that I shouldnt let dd walk just out of sight to a postbox at age 7

but I was allowed to roam the streets/the canal/the local building site/ the town on my own?

Me too and I came home for lunch as well. My mum worked, so left me some sandwiches. I had my own doorkey; it was how it was then. I don't think I was neglected - not by the standards of the 70's.

I would never do that today with mine though and my mum (now in Grandma role) would be horrified if I did too.
