A WWYD on the subject of family rings

DP has a ring, very special to him. It was his late father's, and when he got married he had it made into a band for his wedding. Since he got divorced he wears it on his right hand. We're planning to marry eventually. I'm not sure whether it would make sense to use it as a wedding ring - we could get another but he's not a jewellery person so wouldn't normally wear two rings, but it would seem odd to reuse it in that way!

Could you have it remade again - maybe get a couple of small diamonds set in to it, so it still has the sentimental element of his dad, but isn't his old wedding ring?

I'd thought about having it engraved with something, but maybe having it altered would be better. It sounds weirder than it feels, IYSWIM, that it was his wedding ring.

Having it engraved with his and your initials on the inside would be lovely, I think.
