Right - Simon Mayon on Radio 2...

..Can someone tell me if he's as good as he was on Radio 5? I can't bring myself to tune to Radio 2 to find out, but if someone tells me he's good I will. I can't bear another day of Richard "LOOK AT ME MUM I"M ON THE RADIO!!!!!!" Bacon.

I'm finding him dull. But I found him dull on 5 as well whenever I stumbled across him. When are Radio 2 going to realise that we only want Stuart Maconie?

policywonk · 03/03/2010 18:24

Interesting question seeker. I have no idea as I can't quite bring myself to listen to him on R2 either.

I suspect nobody is entirely happy with this situation (except, as you say, Richard Bacon's mum)

Roxylox · 03/03/2010 18:30

I really enjoyed Mayo on Radio 5 but I'm with said - dull, dull, dull. Time of the day when I've often got the radio on, and pitching around at the mo to find something else. Then I flick back to 5 thinking, he can't be that boring, but he is

moodlum · 03/03/2010 18:32

He is dull, but I do think he is dull in quite a soothing way. He doesn't make my ears itch like Chris Evans, and he doesn't annoy me like awful Richard whatever his name is.

So, I'm on the fence being dull at 5, and its an OK place to be.

said · 03/03/2010 18:35

Is "awful Richard" Bacon or Allinson? Allinson is awful.

seeker · 03/03/2010 18:36

He ISN"T dull! He's self effacing and quite a quietly sneaky interviewer. And he had really good guests. Unlike Richard "Natural Heir to Alan Partridge" Bacon!

He is very, very dull. Just can't bring myself to listen to him at all. Tried a couple of times and then just gave up.

Really don't like Chris Evans in the morning either, he was so much better at Drivetime. Afraid I've stopped listening to the breakfast show too.

bumpybecky · 03/03/2010 18:41

I was disappointed when I first heard Simon Mayo was going to take over drivetime, but I'm mellowing now two months in. He's not as energetic as I'd like, but better than anything else on. I never listened to him on 5 though, so can't comment on that.

He's dull, yes but my God he's a million times better than gobby Evans. I'm still searching for a new breakfast show. Evans is unlistenable.

moodlum · 03/03/2010 18:44

awful richard allinson. Hate hate hate hate him.

By contrast I did used to have a sneaky crush on Richard Bacon, but I'm over that strangeness now.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 03/03/2010 18:45

I never heard him on 5, but always preferred him to Chris Evans when he used to stand in for him.

I think he has a nice way of handling the dullards/jerks/idiots who phone in (not that everyone is in this category) - we know he knows but he doesn't humiliate them.

I haven't listened to a whole show yet, but he doesn't seem quite comfortable to me somehow.

cissycharlton · 03/03/2010 18:51

I can't bear Simon Mayo. I've never liked him, whatever he's been on. There's just something about him.

said · 03/03/2010 18:52

He has these music themes, for some reason, which means he ends up playing really crap records just because they fit the theme. And yes, find Evane unbearable in the morning, talking over records all the time, reverting to type as a bossy humiliator of his (urgh) posse

cissycharlton · 03/03/2010 18:54

Those music themes are the worst thing ever. I totally agree.

cocolepew · 03/03/2010 18:56

God Allinson in the morning is unbearable, he sounds so smug, like he's always about to lol at his own wonderness*. But he didn't know what a "shop bought woman" line in Cracklin' Rosie meant, and I do [smug right back at cha]

megcleary · 03/03/2010 18:57

totally off point but I cannot take another day of Richard Bacon he is so dumb he makes my ears bleed

I could bear it at night as i dozed off but daytime no, we need a concerted effort to get him off the airwaves ....

I believe Mark Thompson is looking for savings...

said · 03/03/2010 19:11

Allinson is like an office bore isn't he? Talks with a knowing smirk in his voice, like he's telling you something you don't know. And plays loads of crap MOR stuff.

seeker · 11/03/2010 18:55

I think I've given Richard Bacon long enough now.

I'm going to have to listen to the depressing play on Radio 4, aren't I?

I like Richard Bacon

[lone voice]

TheFoosa · 11/03/2010 19:20

Richard Bacon is alright, he can laugh at himself which is handy in his case

rocketupbum · 11/03/2010 20:05

I am afraid I quite like bacon too! But I did prefer mayo on 5, he does interview really well and gets a good angle from guests, he feels a bit wasted on 2 for me. I totally loved Chris Evans on drive time but cannot get into breakfast show at all, I can't really focus on it with school run etc and he does hurt my ears a bit. I am sad as I love him, but think perhaps it just doesn't work that early. Also Lynne the traffic lady really really bugs me - irrational but true!

jodevizes · 12/03/2010 19:33

Never heard him on 5 but I find him too soft for an evening 'drive time' show, just as CE is too in your face for the breakfast slot. I really hate that predictable start to his show, the same every day, yuk.
Mayos quiz show on 4 is only listenable because of the comedians.

It seems that everything is in flux. I used to like Alex Zane on Xfm but he went and they had something like Simon Mayo, luckily they have changed him and it is not bad. I also find myself going to Absolute for Christian O'Connor who seems to have improved.

Could it be that I am getting old and set in my ways though? Oh Dear.
