Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you find it credible that Kate, who changed continents twice to get away from her own children, has now morphed into Grandmother of the Year, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Well, Finlay may have made good his escape, but we're all still stuck inside the Borsetshire forcefield. The cricket team is rising phoenix-like from the ashes but will now be The Bull's team, not Ambridge's. Will Alice and Rex make a go of things? Will George cope with a month off the booze? Will the real Brian Aldridge re-appear? Will we hear a bit more about farming? We did get a lambing scene the other night, which was good.

Over to you!

P. S. The pointless new AI title generator MN has introduced in spite of absolutely nobody ever asking for it wanted to call this thread something like Discuss The Archers here, no spoilers. I won't be following its suggestions.

Yep. Same for the late Queen's mum, Queen Mary also.

If you are a royalist you have to accept it. You can't pick and choose.

It would be a lot more fun if we could pick and choose who the monarch/heir married. They could come up with a shortlist and then we could have a referendum!

TottersBlithely · 15/04/2026 09:31

Wot, like the last referendum?

Hmm
Brefugee · 15/04/2026 09:33

Anne for me to be interim Head of State, a sort of President while we dismantle the RF. Then a president that we trust. So my restrictions are: no member of the ex-RF and nobody who has held cabinet Office or been a party leader.

My picks are:Doreen Lawrence, Floella Benjamin or Tanni Grey-Thompson (all currently life baronesses)

Gonners · 15/04/2026 08:44

Yes, this not "Not My Queen" nonsense always makes me laugh. Get rid of the monarchy or suck it up, chaps.

That would look good on a Tshirt or baseball cap @Gonners !

Im still not listening at the moment as there isn’t a single storyline that interests me so thank you all for keeping me informed and entertained.

@AndWorseAFemale , Her husband was of course known as Prince Phillip and not King... He was known as the Duke of Edinburgh or Prince Philip. He wasn't a king.
Queen Victoria's husband was Prince Albert.

Queen Elizabeth II 's mother was Queen Elizabeth, her grandmother was Queen Mary.

I don't think I'll ever get used to Prince Charles now being 'The King' but I don't really care.

When the late Queen died and Huw Edwards (spit) immediately referred to the king I must admit I had a bit of a moment.

I didn't. I heard the news on the radio (R4, of course) and thought 'The Queen is dead, long live the King'.
I was sad but life goes on. It was the end of an era.

Regardless of what I think of monarchy, I think 'the Queen' had been in the role for so long that she seemed a constant, almost like an elderly neighbour or relative.

BeatriceBatchelor · 15/04/2026 14:20

When Charles married CPB, didn't the Queen issue a statement saying she would not be known as Queen Camilla. It was to be a morganatic marriage. Years later QE said she wished for her to be known as Queen Camilla when Charles became king.

Or have I made that up?

RuairiDonovan · 15/04/2026 14:39

It was something like CPB would be known as 'Queen Consort' then years later that CPB would be 'Queen Camilla'.

RuairiDonovan · 15/04/2026 14:49

Princess Consort not Queen Consort.

That was done at the time of their marriage as part of the massive PR plan of the palace to soften up the public towards Camilla. I don't think they ever actually intended she wouldn't be Queen, but at the time she was still very much a figure of public dislike( rightly in my opinion) because of her affair with Charles.

Later on the palace presumably decided she had been sufficiently rehabilitated, so the Queen issued the statement about wishing her to have the title of Queen after her death.

I'd vote for Floella Benjamin any day of the week.

Queen Floella has a ring about it.

I think she is absolutely magnificent.

RuairiDonovan · 15/04/2026 17:05

Lynda Snell would get my vote.

RuairiDonovan · 15/04/2026 19:19

We know who the date was with.

TottersBlithely · 15/04/2026 19:32

Oh - of course!!

RuairiDonovan · 15/04/2026 19:33

It was obvious yesterday. I also thought Fallon had invited Alice and Rex.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/04/2026 19:34

So did I.

Cantsleepdontsleep · 15/04/2026 19:49

Please help me out and don’t make me listen to yesterday’s episode again. It was bad enough the first time round.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/04/2026 20:11

I think it is being hypothesised that Chris went on a date with Lottie, since both were going out this evening.

Unless this is about Rex and supper at Fallon's?

The BBC synopsis for 13th says
"Noting her stress over Brian, Fallon asks Alice how things are going with Rex, suggesting they come over for supper on Wednesday." So Fallon had no business to be surprised when Alice and Rex came round. It's that word "they": in most contexts it means "more than one person".

RuairiDonovan · 15/04/2026 20:12

I think it is being hypothesised that Chris went on a date with Lottie, since both were going out this evening. Yes.

Gonners · 15/04/2026 20:16

It can only have been Lottie or Esme. There are no other Available Women within 50 miles.

I haven't heard today's episode but i assumed that yesterday.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/04/2026 20:23

And we'll all look all nohow if it turns out that each of them went out with someone who doesn't speak in the programme, won't we.

There was a slightly ambiguous moment tonight when Rex asked Chris "does she have kids?" and Chris said "yes" – I think Lottie has only one daughter?

RuairiDonovan · 15/04/2026 20:27

Chris wouldn't have elaborated. If you asked someone if they had children they'd probably say 'yes' or 'yes, one/[number]'.

Gonners · 15/04/2026 20:27

I assume Lottie was mentioned yesterday, then? I am proud to say that I now seem to have much of TA on auto-delete. I listen, roll my eyes, and (within a couple of hours) forget about it, unless it was of any interest. It rarely is.

I think if someone asked me if a person with one kid had "kids", I might just say yes, rather than get specific.
