Bloom's Day - Ulysses

Did anyone enjoy this ?

Just asking as I thought it a tremendous waste of time, but only because I was never a fan of English Lit, and given this is deemed a less popular "classic" which a large proportion of the British public has never finished, it struck me as not being a gripping "page turner" so why bother ?

Shock expected from perhaps one or two :)

No there is a MNetter who listens to 'culture' mate!! Because I've recently read 'Portrait' and enjoyed it (apart from the unbearable religious indoctrination pages OMG no wonder DH has the lapsed Catholic guilt!)

IKWYM about Ulysses on R4 when the burping and farting got a bit much (also the toilet scene was coinciding with lunchtime!) Then we went out! TBH the only coversation we had about it was 'they must have had very uncomfortable bums in the days of newspapers!!'

Didn't listen myself, so feel happy to have missed the burping and farting, tbh, but it was devoting the day that got me - though I suppose I should be glad they used R4 and not R4 Extra, as it demonstrates their acceptance that we are not all blessed with digital sets, by a long chalk (though frankly, if the Freeview box makers had not altered their channel selection systems to [in many cases] make the radio channels invisible to the public, we could now be classed as all having access to the digital only services, via the net, Freeview or FreeSat [plus cable for those lucky enough to get it passing their doors].

I switched on (too early) for the weather forecast due before 18.00 and switched off again!

...in the days of newspapers!!

I didn't hear the R4/Ulysses take on this but we had newspaper when I was little. The main problem was the print coming off!

I didn't make any effort to either listen or avoid it so I caught bits throughout the day. I have tried to read the book in the past but couldn't get on with it. I had hoped the readings might help me see the error of my ways, but no. It's just a windbag doing stream of consciousness - not my thing at all.

The answer to 'why bother?' is, I think, something along the lines of 'because it's there'. They are excited because it has just come out of copyright so they can mess about without having to get permission.

R4 I thought I was old! Grin Oh dear are there more out of copyright books in the pipeline d'you reckon?
