Why do contestants on quizzes always want to "say a few hellos"? And why do they always finish with "and everybody else who knows me"??

When a DJ has a birthday or other "shout" to read out and it's asked for between, say, 6 and 7, why do they always read it at the wrong time?

And why do they read it verbatim like this:
"Dear [DJ], please could you say a big hello to my daughter so-and-so, it will be her 14th birthday on so-and-so, I'd be grateful if you could read it out between..."
Can't they just say: "happy birthday to Katie form your mum Jane Jones in Worcester" or whatever?
