Does this new word puzzle make sense to first-time players?

I've made a little word puzzle – would love to know what people think
I've been working on a word puzzle called InferIt, which I've been playing with friends and family. It's a bit like Wordle, except instead of telling you which letters are green/yellow, it gives you numbers and you have to work out what they mean.

I'm particularly interested in whether the rules make sense to people who've never seen it before!

I like the concept and can see myself getting a bit addicted. However, I'd agree the instructions are confusing and it only made sense having read this thread. I'm also struggling a bit with the game play mechanism, but typing out my confusion here has helped clarify things for me so I won't embarrass myself by outlining my stupidity 😁 One more note: I like that you can mark incorrect letters off, but on my phone screen it was then a little difficult to see what the letter was under the x, so I had to unmark them to tick off the same letters in other words. Not a major problem (and probably avoided if I'd been more logical in the first place!) but worth mentioning given you're asking for feedback. Overall though, nice game and I'll be playing it again in the future. Thanks for sharing it with us!

I too found the explanations a bit unclear but love the game!

I'm struggling to understand double letters, other than that, i really like it.

I play hardle each day and this looks similar, so maybe look at their instructions. I wanted to type a word in and my keyboard didn't come up or work for the guided puzzle. It would be useful to be able to skip the guided one, of that's the issue.

I don’t get how to play it at all? Why is the white box flashing? And I got rid of all of finch, but then the letters came back again dark grey.

It’s essentially wordle and mastermind combined? Like others I found the instructions a bit hard to understand, but once you get the hang of them, it’s good! I always loved playing mastermind though.

I got today's 5 puzzles in a total of 20 mins. I couldn't share the results, as it is just stuck on "preparing result image".

The ones without the helpful 0:0 words are especially tricky.

I can't tell if I like it or not, as I find it a bit confusing, but I'm sure I'll be back again tomorrow.

Hard to understand but I’ve enjoyed doing the puzzles once I sort of got it.

very stuck on 14 though I just can’t figure out how I’m supposed to do it - so I would say it needs either more training or easier practice games.

Got there in the end as you’ve sorted the hints thank you. I think it’s a really good puzzle maybe just need some help with the wording of the explanations.

I think the instructions need to be clearer but now that I've worked through a few I really like it.

Fucking hell - I’m pretty smart - and love puzzles- this makes no sense to me…

I’ve just tried again. It still makes no sense to me and I’m usually good with puzzles.

It took me a minute to get the hang of it as the instructions weren't very intuitive (that might just be me though), but I found the guided puzzles helpful, and really it's a simple (but tricky!) process of elimination. Once I got my head around that, I was away! Great fun!

The clues are so unclear that I can use them to eliminate letters. But I dont understand them

Could you make it so that you can reopen a hint
? On today's daily no.5 I used a hint but it overlay the puzzle so I couldn't match what it was saying to the grid. Then ofc I forgot what the hint said but couldn't toggle between it and the grid. Does that make I even sense?

I agree. Especially as the hint covers the grid on my phone. Which is partly why I don't understand them.

Having issues now with rules for double letters.

Yep, daily puzzle 2 same problem with the double letters. R. That’s not logical

For rules about replicated letters, go to the help page. It describes the rules.
Also, if you are unsure about a specific case, you can take a screenshot and show Gemini/ChatGPT etc. They can infer the rules and explain specific double letter instances.

"Use AI to solve it" isnt really helpful though. I don't use AI. I want to understand the rules myself and they aren't clear.

For rules about replicated letters, go to the help page. It describes the rules in detail. It presents examples and explains why in some situations the number in the red wrong positions box is not necessarily the number of letters that you have coloured red in the clue.

I'm not finding the duplicated letters too much of an issue. But these hints confused me. I don't understand them without also being able to see the highlighted clues

Im actually enjoying the game. So much so that I've sent a link to friends who love word puzzles. But if using hints leaves me still confused then I'll get bored quite quickly.

Yes. I will take a look. You could try the Android version from the play store, as the web version is difficult to design for every device at once. Your phone has a fairly low resolution, so it is hard to put too much text on the screen, but it is difficult for me to detect that and present a different view when that is the case.

I'll try coding something up tonight.

Makes no sense whatsoever, and I love logic puzzles 🧐
