PBD. I agree that the checkerboard was horrible and distracting. Strands had weird colours today as well.

I knew the type of connection purple was aiming for, but couldn't see the link, so I guess default.

Reading the NYT comments re: the squares - it's not a spoiler (as the word is there!) to say that people think it was trying to mimic the red and white squares on a picnic blanket. But no one liked it!

I had to shuffle a few times to check whether the coloured squares were independent of the words. Very distracting. Purple very much by default .
