Any advice on a good pushchair/pram for pulling up stairs?

We have a Pliko from DD1 but I had forgotten how useless it is for pulling up stairs backwards - as the brake is on the wheels and clicks on when you're trying to pull it. Most of the strollers/pushchairs seem to have the same design feature. Does anyone know of one that doesn't and can be pulled up without the brakes locking on?

There are a few pushchairs with handbrakes. Do you think those would not have the same issue? I haven't tried bumping them up more than the odd step though!

Thanks Tiggy - I haven't seen any with handbrakes (and when I asked last - can't remember if it was John Lewis or Mothercare) they didn't mention that. Do you know any of the brands by any chance?

BJCM is great for stairs. The brake thing is in the middle of the bottom bar, but never catches on the stairs.

Will the pram be for a newborn?

Maybe a Quinny Buzz? the brake on that is next to the wheel and won't catch.

Jane Slalom Pro - the 3 wheeled one. Brake is on the front wheel and operated from the handle. There is a foot brake but it has never got in the way. We've got about 15 steps up to our front door and it's been brilliant.

Or a Bugaboo Frog/Gecko/Cameleon depending on your budget. They all have handbrakes. I've got a Gecko I bought on eBay with all the extras for £119. The big back wheels go up steps easily. I've got two huge (about 10-12 inches)steps at the front of my building and goes up and down them really easily.

Thanks, that's all very useful. I'll definitely check these out. (If Bugabooing it will have to be ebay). I doubt we'll get one in time for the newborn but we used the sling so much for DD1 anyway that I'm not too worried about getting it straight away.

The Baby Jogger City Select and Elite both have handbrakes too. My TFK (trends for kids) pushchair has a handbrake too so their website may be worth a look.

I live up a flight of steps. I use with no problem BJCM, Bug Cam and P&T Explorer. Got rid of maclaren because of the scraping issue. Anything with large rear wheels will make it much easier to haul up.

If you want something compact and not bothered about forward facing the Micralite pushchairs are fab as they have large air tyres at the back.

I have the Graco Symbio which is great, large air back tyres and a handbrake make it easy to pull backwards up stairs and it's generally a great pram/pushchair too. You can get the carrycot for newborn, car seat clips on and we've just moved into the proper pushchair seat which looks very supportive and comfortable, DS loves it, three reclining positions and handle flips at the touch of a button so can rear or forward face.

I probably sound like I'm selling the damn things but so many of my friends complain about their prams and are on to two or three and I am so pleased with our choice , wouldn't swop it. Only tiny complaint is that the shopping basket is a bit small.

I've got a hack citi which is a cheaper version of BJCM. No problems on stairs here!

I would second the Micaralite, we have several different large and small steps to get to our house and doesn't even wake a sleeping child - it's fab :)

one more question - for Cod and Mama - from what age is the Micralite stroller suitable? I'm guessing 3 months? Ta

I've got a fastfold that says from 3 months but my LOs sit up late so didn't use until they could sit up - for mine that means nearer 10 months! You can get a carrycot so it's suitable from birth and can also get adapters to use with maxi-cosi car seats if for short journeys (as I don't drive it was a godsend)

You can get a micralite toro which reclines fully, but they cost much more.

You can often get Toros for £100 or less on eBay. There are four on at the moment.

Nipper 360 is nice and light and. Great for pulling up stairs. Also the Micralite. But the Micralite isn't so good when carrying lots of stuff so I prefer the nipper.

Again question about catching the brakes on the stairs: I want to replace my britax smart (which has been great on climbing the stairs backwards) with a lighter stroller, but realised that the brakes are usually on the wheels - assuming will have a problem on the stairs. Can anyone please write which stroller they use and whether it catches brakes on stairs? Considering Silver Cross pop or zest, joie brisk, uppa baby g-luxe, maclaren. Any problems with those brakes?

hi I was wondering if any mums could help. I’m wanting to get a new pushchair for my daughter and I’m struggling with what type as it needs be one good for going up and down stairs. The previous one I had was the umbrella type with the 2 handles, the break kept catching on the stairs. So my question is do any other mums have the umbrella type and do you have the same problem if not can you recommend good prams for coming up stairs. Or is the other type better.

@leannew2022 - basically large wheels to bounce up, and a brake that goes on ont he handle not feet.
Our mountain buggy bounces up 15 front steps easily and brake is up high.

anything in your picture isn’t going to bounce up stairs well. If you need small and compact you need to just take child out and carry empty pushchair up
