Umbrella pushchair for a heavy toddler?

I have a Stokke for my 13mo DS, but I don't use very often - always end up using the Ergo baby carrier or a wrap.

I'm thinking of buying an umbrella pushchair to travel home for a month, and I'm looking for something cheap and light - probably it won't be used too often so I don't want to invest too much on it.

Problem is, my toddler is over 12kg, and all the umbrella pushchairs I found are for babies "up to 15kg," which is pretty useless...

Do you have any suggestion of a model I could buy? What should I look for in this kind of buggy?

Well I have a Techno XT which my 3.5yo occasionally goes in and she's absolutely fine. She's about 14kg. Bags of room and no sign of stress on the frame. My 8yo niece has hitched a lift in it on holiday when arsing about!

I can see why you want lightweight but tbh I found that a more substantial pushchair copes better with bigger children. I'd look at a Quest or Triumph at the least. Loads of second hand ones on eBay.

If you look at the equivalent buggy on a USA site then they'll almost certainly have a higher recommended weight...For some reason over here buggies are only tested up to 15kg.

The Maclaren Techno is up to 55lb in the USA...Which is a lot more than 15kg.

Gwendoline, I wanted a lightweight buggy because I hate carrying the thing around, but you're right, probably a light one would be too weak for DS...

suzie, that's a great suggestion, I had no idea they only tested buggies up to 15kg here, but now everything makes sense! You saved the day, I'll check on the US sites now, thanks for that!

we have a techno xt and a maclaren quest, the xt is great for my 18kg eldest when she needs it on holiday etc and the quest is really hard to push because of it's small wheels

15kg will take him ages to reach, and as others have said, it's likely they'll be sturdy longer than that anyway, especially something like a maclaren.

I regularly pile a week's worth of shopping plus my 13kg toddler on my cheapy umbrella fold and it's fine, though - hasn't collapsed yet!

Hevster, I'm thinking of buying the XT - it's a bit more expensive than I'd like, but DH loved the video showing all the gimmicks! :) Is it easy to carry? The wheels don't look large...

BertieBotts, you're right, he won't be 15kg next week, but I would like something to last until he stops using them. I don't want to buy any other buggy if I can avoid it! :)

It's a bit hefty to carry but I've flown with it many times and it's never been a problem. The wheels are bigger than the other models, except the XLR. I really recommend it. It's done us really well and will do this next one too. And lots of new funky colours now :)

the wheels are big enough and we have flown with it plenty of times, def one of the better purchases we have made and it's on it's second child now no probs
