Carpet shops

We have lots of projects going on with our house and my next one is carpets. The entire upstairs needs to be re-carpeted. I have never had to buy a carpet in my life and I am unsure what type of shop will be best - the small local shop, or a big chain like Allied or CarpetRight? Any advice or tips as to who to stay away from?

John Lewis is my fave.

Investigate your local shops.

One will be run by a gin soaked lady, you will run a mile.

The other will be based in some weird premises, but the owner will listen to exactly what you want, will leave you alone with a stack of amples umming & aahing, popping in every now & again to see how you are getting on. He will do this patient;ly the second & third time you do this. He will come out and measure your rooms and work out a way of using a waste strip behind the bed where you can't see it, which will save you ££££. Surprisingly, none of the chains nor John Lewis tell you about this idea. ANd the price will keep him happy and you happy.

Give your local carpet shops a whirl, they are there for a reason, and some of them really know their stuff. You need to keep them in business over the recession so hey are there for use later as well!

Nothing to lose!

Local independents tend to give better service IMO

Thank you so much for your advice. I'll start with my local shop then!

i have vowed never to use Allied or Carpetright again after too many bad experiences

I used a local firm for my sitting room/hall/stairs and the difference in quality and service was immense. they've done such a good job of it all

if you happen to live in the south east it was Fludes that I used!

I'd also use the local shop, they tend to have a good range at good prices and give much better service than the chains.

Am not impressed by J Lewis recently, they seem to have laid off most of the staff so the service is pretty poor now IMO.

Local shop - we've just had new carpets, and our local shop were totally fantastic, and a very good price too.

Don't go near CarpetRight

Definitely local is the way to go then. Thanks for saving me from the chain stores!
