Painting a wardrobe.

DH doesn't like our wardrobe anymore and wants a white one. I am being scrooge and not wanting to fork out for a new wardrobe when we have a perfectly servicable one already (less than 2 yrs old). So, how easy do you think it would be too paint the old one white and for it to look ok?

TIA

It would take a lot of work but could be done.
Sand
prime
Gloss/eggshell

I would advise not using brilliant white, can look really stark. Did a bedding chest with white trade eggshell was pants.

Cheers. Basically in terms of time and swear words it would be easier to buy a new one.

Exactly. And someone will buy/take the old one.

Hi. I just painted a revolting brown wooden wardrobe from Ikea. I "keyed" the surface with a medium grade paper - don't need to sand back to bare wood, just enough to enable subsequent paint to adhere. I then applied a couple of coats of Annie Sloan furniture paint and, once the paint was dried, a couple of coats of clear wax. It looks fab! You can purchase Annie Sloan paint and the wax from her website. The old white, by the way, is lovely.

Great idea to paint. When we moved into our new house with old crap furniture I painted everything!! Do as Wood Rose says and perhaps "shabby-chic" it up a bit by running some candlewax or soap along the edges, paint over it then rub it off to create an "aged" look - will look great with off whites or grays. Have you thought of crackle-glazing? That's dead easy too - just paint on a coat of dark paint, apply crackle-glaze spray (Homebase??)-et voila!!
