How big is your utility room?

In feet of poss [old person emoticon]. Our utility room is unncecessarily huge and overlooks our garden which seems a complete waste. I am wondering if I can make a small utily room and a decent sized study from the space.

I need to get in a washing machine, tumble drier and a butler sink and space for my mop and bucket.

I am torn now. Sink is essential for muddy rugby kit soaking. And yes I have masses of washing. Our washing machine is on twice a day every day. Sometimes more.

Why not put a little desk, comptuter etc in around the space you have? Best of both worlds at no extra expense.

It wouldn't be a space conducive to working if you are surrounded by piles of washing and rugby kit now.Would it?

Our utility room is not big - approx 6'6 x 8' DH reckons.

Have a small cupboard, wahing machine and dryer down one side with a work top above, and a shelve on wall above that. Has a door in and then an external door out to garden. Enough room to stand an airer. If airer is down enough room to iron.

Hulababy · 16/06/2010 21:44

Oh - and even though it is small and compact I still manage to dry all my washing in theere with no problems.

In my dream utility room I would like a large walk-in dog shower. That would make my life complete. Well not complete exactly, but it would help. I would also have a second dishwasher for days when the kitchen has got so out of hand that one isn't enough. And one of those American top loading washing machines just to do the dogs bedding. They get too many hairs in the other one.

I'd love a dog shower, one day....in my dreams.

ExitPursuedByABear · 17/06/2010 12:03

Your dogs have bedding? I just shake his comfy mattress thingy out of the door and that has to do.

Ours is 8x12' contains wm, sink/drainer, freezer, tumbledryer, fridge/freezer and the ironing board is permanently up ! Also have a ceiling mounted drying rack. tbh we fill the space because it is there, has become a haven for clutter and ironing, and it feels disproportionate to the rest of the house.

FellatioNelson · 17/06/2010 17:10

Well when I say bedding they don;t have matching duvet cover and pillowcases, or anything. I don't do them hospital corners.

The have fleecy matting stuff to line in their beds, and they have a cheapy sleeping bag each, which gets chucked in the washing machine when it gets unbearably smelly, or chucked in the bin when they are bored and rip all the filling out for a laugh.

We do tuck them up at night in their covers though. With just their little heads poking out.

Forget utility envy. Now I have dogs-snuggled-up-for-the-night-envy.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 20/06/2010 21:06

mine is pathetic. it is a joke to call it a "room" it is a Utility Corridor. its about six by three foot if that. it is big enough to have washer and dryer stacked on each other, and a very slim fridge freezer.
Mr Bodge the previous owner painted the artexed walls to resemble lemon mirangue pie, which is not as nice as it sounds and put in a really stupid and useless cupboard, plus a worktop which means that we cant get a bigger fridge freezer unless we rip out worktop....which will doubless rip out half the bloody mirangue wall.

Ignore me im grumpy with the pox.

ours is 4x8 have a combined washer/dryer, couple of cupboards, space for coats/shoes and room for the ironing board to be out. Its got quite high ceiling so have a ceiling airer too, it's definitely compact but better than not having one! (have only recently discovered the joys of utility rooms - am turning into my mum )
