Does anyone have any workable hints or tips for finding a 4/5 bedroom house to rent from a private landlord anywhere in the midlands / west midlands / east midlands area?

there are lots of private landlord websites if you google. vivastreet.co.uk might be a good place to start.
It's a shame you're not looking at next August as we'll be putting our up for rental and it's a great 4 bed in a lovely market town in e.midlands. Oh well

when you say private landlord, you just mean direct with the landlord and not through an agent?

Hi, yes, I mean direct with a landlord. Preferably one who would take cash. We're looking at around 5-750 per month depending on location.

Is there a way to get hold of local papers from other areas without having to go to the area to buy each week?

if you look on those paper's websites -
for example

the evening telegraph covers a huge area, so there's peterborough, northampton evening telegraph etc...
