Cheap floorcovering - ideas?

We won't be able to lay carpet on our bare boards for a while. The boards are in poor nick, so painting not an option - and in any case we do want carpet once it can be afforded, so don't want to do too much prep. Any suggestions to keep the splinters at bay in th meantime? Won't need to go right to the edges, but the rooms are quite big...

Off cut carpets are quite cheap.
Big rugs are not so cheap but will look great.

Always wear slippers!

You could try freecycle for big rugs? I'm about to give one away on my local one!
Or ask if anyone is throwing out old carpets which you could cut down? I don't think there is an alternative solution (the slipper idea is good!)

I think big rugs might be the way to go - and slippers! Thank you.

I did wonder about sisal-type mats; has anyone got views on these?
