Would love to hear your views on the pros and cons of scatter back sofas vs formal back and what you would think of a combination of both in a living room? Dh seems to think formal back are more comfy and I love the look of scatter back with the cushions and all..would love to hear your views on this!

Hate them (quite simply) I only just got rid. I must have straightened them out at least ten times a day and I honestly do think I have more time for other things since getting new suite.

Yep look lovely if you don't let anyone sit on them, but spent half my life rearranging the buggas. I can't stand wonky cushions, they have to be just so.

scatter-back look lovely - couldn't be doing with the practicalities personally, and don't find them as comfy.

Combination of both depends on the sofas, and numbers thereof.

ladysybil · 13/06/2010 16:39

if by scatter back you mean the sort that only look decent after you spend ten minutes plumping them, and before anyone sits on them, then i would sayl, steer clear. well clear. unless you want your living room to permanently look a mess

scatterback = look old ladyish & you'll be constantly readjusting. Don't do it.

My parents had these. They were a pain and became very uncomfortable as the cushions became all mishapen and squashed (and this was in a holiday home, so not used a great deal)

I always seemed to spend ages trying to get them in a position o get comfy.

I'd only ever have sofa's without these.

I've just ordered some "Cardiff" sofas from SofaSofa at £269 each. No cushions!! Can't wait to get rid of my grubby old scatterbacks!

NoseyNooNoo · 25/06/2010 10:38

Another vote against scatter back - uncomfortable and untidy.

I have a rather expensive degas by Tetrad huge sofa "here www.tetrad.co.uk/english/details.asp?Id=132&RID=5&Range=Leather+Traditional"
with the different sized cushions. Yes its messy especially when the children use it to make dens. I think a lot of friends just dont look comfy on it and hubby hates it.

I have an additional back cushion made to push the cushions forward (another expense!)

I think it does work in some ways - the cushions have to be feather.
