Removal costs. How much is too much?

Have just been given a rough quote for moving us. Approx 525 for the removal. Another 300 for boxing everything up so we have to do nothing. And there is a returnable deposit on all the crates.

Seems a bit steep to me but never used a removals company before. Anyone got experience?

We paid about £700 for removal and packing (and a bit of unpacking the other end) for a 2 bed flat (with not that much stuff) moving across London.

Yours sounds reasonable assuming you've got a bit more stuff than us and assuming you're in London/the SE.

Mind you it also depends on things like, are there many stairs to go up, are you moving appliances, will it all fit in one van load, how long is the journey (i.e. how early will they have to start).

OrmRenewed · 10/06/2010 14:04

No we're in the southwest, but it's 3-bed terraced house. We're going about a mile

We are paying £300 which is a luton van's worth of stuff, not packing or supplying boxes for us.

misdee · 10/06/2010 14:58

we paid £600 for removals only in hertfordshire.

and £1 per cardboard box, which we kepts for ebaying afterwards.

victoriah3 · 10/06/2010 15:00

We were quoted about £500 to move contents of a 3 bed semi 12 miles. In the end we hired our own vehicle but was a nightmare, our stuf didnot fir in and we had to make two trips leaving everything in the garden to pick up later as the new owner insisted we left at noon. My advice would be to use the professionals - I would next time

OrmRenewed · 10/06/2010 15:29

Thanks everyone. These people are supposed to be the best but might try a few more places too.

My mum paid £750 to pack and move a 4 bed house.

SparkyUK · 10/06/2010 21:41

We are in south London and we got one quote for £2750 to move our 4 bedroom about a mile down the road. We laughed the guy out of the house and then got two more quotes, both around £1k. We thought was a bargain in comparison but now i'm wondering if we should try to get more quotes in. tbh though, i think we just have a lot of junk stuff.

PatriciaHolm · 10/06/2010 21:52

We paid nearly 2k for packing and moving our 4 bed from central london to surrey!

OrmRenewed · 10/06/2010 22:25

I can't beleive how much it varies!

Another quote came in about 200 less.

We moved from a 3 bed and they used 2 removal vans, and we are talking Pickfords massive removal trucks

Never move yourself!

I would be looking at the insurance angle, like cancellation (if your move date falls through) damage to goods in transit and property damage in case they put a corner of something through your wall as you are leaving.

2old4thislark · 11/06/2010 17:37

moved from a 3 bed house, just a mile away, 5 years ago and paid about £500 - did have quotes for £700 and £1200! 2 vans in the end!

Was worth every penny - don't try and do it yourself. I moved from 1 bed flat when I was young and it was the most knackering day in my life, ever!

OrmRenewed · 12/06/2010 09:02

Yes we did a self-move last time. WIth the help pf mum and dad, and some friends and a friend's van. I think we used up all our favours and still owe them 13yrs later!

We are moving soon. DH has arranged for 3 removal companies to come and give us a quote. We will discuss with each company what they can provide service-wise. Then we will compare the 3 quotes and go with the company that gives us the best deal. This might not neccesarily be the cheapest.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 13/06/2010 09:32

Try Leakers in Highbridge, they were by far the cheapest quote when we moved (some distance) and it went well.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 13/06/2010 13:48

We paid 1,300 to move a three bed flat 2 miles up the road in central'ish London. Again worth every penny.

OrmRenewed · 13/06/2010 17:55

Thanks wynken.

Sounds good to me Orm.

We paid £1300 for just removals 4 years ago. 4 bed house (we're not big on clutter though) moved 3 miles up the road to 3 storey 5 bed

OrmRenewed · 14/06/2010 08:16

I've got a bloke from a removals company coming over today to do a proper quote. I am going to lay it on the line and let him see the full and unexpurgated horror of our cupboards, loft and garage and let him do his worst!

OP posts:
OrmRenewed · 15/06/2010 14:19

Right. Got assessor round. Given us a quote for removal and packing everything downstairs apart from the understairs dumping ground We're packing upstairs. I don't want everything being just packed up and taken - I want to force the kids to sort their belongings (not to mention dh!). So we're getting cartons delivered asap so we can start the sorting/packing process.

£713 incl VAT and insurance.

Had 2 quotes so far. We have a 3 bedroom terraced with a loft room and a garage. First quote is £325, with us doing all the packing and the removals firm supplying the boxes.
Second quote was £525 with removals firm putting up beds and plumbing in washer.
Third firm coming round tomorrow.

snufflebug · 17/06/2010 18:54

we had a quote for moving from London to surrey for £1,300 last year from a terraced 5 bed house and it was worth every single penny. It took all the stress out of moving and we had a 4 month old and a 2 year old so stree levels could have been very high! But we need to move again now as we are renting atm and I had a quote from same company to move us a few miles down the road and it came in over £2,000! Plus the access is loads better here for the removal men so overall easier job. I think it depends quite alot on the asssessor and this one obviously thought he could take me for abit of a ride!

rebl · 17/06/2010 19:40

We paid £700 for packing and moving (moved about 5miles). We had 1 very big lorry and it was very very very full in that the last stuff didn't fit and they loaded my estate car up as well! I would never consider doing it myself. It was the best spent money of the whole move imo.
