How to deal with a moss covered roof?

We live in a victorian villa with the original slate roof. We had it checked thoroughly when we moved in and were told that it is perfectly sound. Since then, eight years ago, it has steadily become covered in moss. How do we remove this safely without damaging the roof? It isn't doing any damage that we can see but is getting more unsightly and making the house look somewhat shabby. What have you done in a similar situation?

Run a copper wire along the ridge of the roof and, as rain water washes down first touching the copper, it will slowly kill off the moss.

Copper? Really? You learn something new every day! Thanks, we have this problem too and I might just try that...
