Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness.

Just been told we have a moving date of 10 June. We had thought it would be more like end of June beginning July as everything else up to now has taken so blinking long.

I have not packed. I have not thought about packing.

We are away this weekend for the bank holiday and have got a close family wedding next weekend which will take uop the Friday and Saturday.

The new house needs a load of work doing to it which we have not planned, shopped for or got estimates/quotes for.

I have never moved before (as in actual big scary move with removal people and everything).

How much should I be panicking right now?

Not at all.

Sshhh now.. Calm down.

Loads of time.

No really, you have loads of time.

Most of the packing you will only do in the week before you move anyway, as you can't spend weeks living around boxes, there just isn't the room for them.

My friend moved on friday. She started packing wednesday, put all the beds down on thursday, and everything was ready for friday. Get someone to agree to look after kids/entertain them at yours a couple of days beforehand and you will be fine.

Maybe try to do the loft/shed before that though as you will throw loads of stuff away. Have you rung the removal men and got a quote? Do that first and organise boxes etc from them. It will be fine!!

Give notice on your broadband NOW. They probably won't cancel it for a month from when you tell them.

Everyone else is capable of switching accounts at a couple of days' notice if need be.

Make a list of people you need to notify of change of address. And set up a Post Office redirection (at least 5 days before) so that you don't have to worry about not getting right down the list straight away.

Thank you. Is it REALLY loads of time?

Excellent point Purple about giving notice on things now, its bound to take ages.

Ringing removal men now,a lot of them are saying they are too busy this week to come out and give a quote and they are just quoting over the phone without seeing the house, is this normal?

Is £250 for a 2 bed semi, moving a few streets away, about right? We are in the North East.

I have heard of companies quoting over the phone, but not usually the larger firms - I suppose they have people who do the quotes all the time, and perhaps smaller (cheaper?) firms don't.
It might be worth asking them what happens if they get there and tell you that they've underestimated? Is it a fixed price?
FWIW the price sounds okay to me. However, I've never done such a local move. Our last move was a 3-bed semi to 3-bed semi 100 miles away and cost just over £1000!

I'm moving on the 11th, have started packing, but not a huge amount. Our removals company have quoted £300, which is for a luton van sized move. Used them when we moved here and they were that price then! Start a couple of boxes a day now, and the panic will go. (says she who is sitting on here instead of finishing the kitchen packing off!)
