What colours to paint my hall??

Hello my lovelies. OK so dh is off to Japan on Saturday which means, saddo that I am, it's painting time!

So, when you walk into the house you face the stair wall. That part is only about 7 feet wide, with dark wood staircase going up to the right. walk along about 6 feet and there's a couple of steps down to a square hall area with 4 doors off.

The first part of the hall is reasonably light as there's a full length window next to the solid wood door, and a square window next to the big window.

At the moment it's all painted in F&B Print room yellow but the stair wall gets really grubby so I'm thinkin gof painting it a darker colour but a bit worried about it being too dark. I'd keep the other walls a warmish cream, I think.

Upstairs there's a square landing with 4 doors off, a couple of steps up then a long gallery type landing with a squared off bit at the end (room for an armchair & table). There are 3 square windows along the long landing.

The carpet is a sort of medium green, like a sage green. Skirtings are white but the back of the door and the window frames are all dark wood (unfortunatley & dh would objct if I painted the dark wood white).

I'll keep the curtains which are all cream.
Does anyone have any ideas, please?

I had a small fantasy about papering my hallway in this the other day...

That's nice but papering would be too much of a challenge for me unfortunately.

i think try some tester pots first and look at the colours in various lights. We have an old house and it is facing some hills so the light is greenish. The only colour that suits the hall is F&B dorset cream.I did paint below the dado a terracota [same problem as you]but ended up repainting the following day as it just made the house gloomy. But it looks nice in the front hall.I have just resigned myself to painting over the "creative artwork" and chocolate spread[at least I think its chocolate spread !] every year.LOL at doing the painting when DH is away-this is what I do.

Thanks everyone. I'll get a few testers & as you say, prob. end up resigning myself to frequent patchings over.

lol at hoping that it's choc spread ont he wall

I did my hall a nice rich burgundy even though it's small and a bit dark, but I have an old mirror with a gilt trim there too, and that lends the illusion of more light and space than there really is.

I also did a little interior hallway/corridor area the same colour and it made a little nothingy, in-betweeny sort of a space really dramatic and grounded.

Oooh I do like a nice red, quite a few of our rooms have one red wall and the others cream.
