Good friend helping us fix up our house but what should we pay him?

My dh's good friend is going to come and help us sort out our kitchen.

He'll be doing a bit of plumbing, a bit of carepenty etc along with DH. They are both handy, but neither of them have trained as a plumber or electrician or anything. DH likes to do everything by himself. He muddles along and tends to do a decent job.

We reckon the job will take 6 - 10 days. The friend is freelance and has no work for the next couple of weeks so will be glad of the money.

But what should we pay him?

A tenner an hour?

A hundred a month? (That would have to be the max I reckon.)

A proper tradesman would probably charge at least £100 a day. Handymen around here charge around £20 per hour if you just need a few bits and pieces doing.

You would probably be best deciding what you want to/can afford to give him in total. If you go for an hourly rate, you will be getting anxious if he puts in 12 hourly days. If you go for a day rate you will get pissed off if he only does 4-5 hours a day...
