Good commuter village for Manchester?

We live in Chorlton, but fancy a move out of the City, ideally we need to be south but having trouble finding a place which feels down to earth. Any suggestions?

How far are you prepared to go?

Lilymaid · 04/05/2010 14:44

Bollington? Certainly not Alderley Edge or Prestbury!

We lived in Macclesfield for a while, which, while it isn't a village, is very distinct from the city conurbation.
The rail link was excellent (this was 19 or so years ago, so may have changed) and had most of the facilities you would need.

if you're looking to commute on the train into central Manchester then look into the villages on the Sheffield-Manchester line - all of the ones on the Hope Valley side (Edale, Hope, Bamford, Hathersage -further out from Manchester - and nearer to Sheffield in fact) are lovely - if you really do want village life and a bit of remoteness. but pretty dependent on how far you're prepared to commute - I'd start by checking out the train times as they might be too much for you.

Agree with Bollington amd Macc, and also would add Lymm.

Glossop and outlying villages to the north maybe ?

The reason I ask is that, if you're happy with a 40 minute train journey into Piccadilly (which DH does every day) then you have all the lovely villages in South Cheshire.

Are the Saddleworth villages no good for you? 20 mins train ride to Manchester Victoria, glorious countryside and nice village community.

First time i've posted a question, didn't expect a reply...just checked and really chuffed to get suggestions, THANKYOU!.
The reason of going south is to be nearer to my Mum in Shropshire, North looks lovely but the wrong direction. Will give Bollington, Mac and Lymm a good look. Yes feel Prestbury and Alderley Edge not our thing. 40mins / 1 hour Train ride south would be O.K. Marion Cole I was interested to hear if you have any names of those villages?. Thankyou.

Hi Fletcher. I live in Nantwich, which is a lovely small market town with very good schools. It's only about 7 miles from the Shropshire border so would suit you quite well. Not sure where your mum is in Shropshire, but to give you an idea, we're about 40 minutes drive from Telford. DH catches the train to work in Manchester from Crewe, it's a mainline station so there are lots of fast trains (takes about 40 minutes). Audlem is also very lovely, a large village really, closer to Shropshire but further from Crewe.
