Does anyone have Hydroflow? British Gas say it prevents limescale build-up on home appliances

Would love a water softener, as we live in a v.v. hard water area, but I think it costs around £1k to have a system installed?

Today the British Gas engineer who came round to mend our boiler, recommended 'hydroflow' from British Gas. It costs under £200. Apparently it prevents limescale build-up, "keeping your central heating system, household equipment and appliances working smoothly and effectively." And (I really, really hope) would prevent those awful limescale marks on draining board, shower screen, even our cafetiere!

Has anyone invested in this? Is it a good idea? Any thoughts?

Just asked DP as he seems to know about such things. He said - if it's one of those magnet things that go onto the pipe then it's better than nothing. If it's the electric 'thing' (sorry about the technicals!) then they're not much good at all. Also he said if you have a combi boiler then that really will suffer as they really don't like hard water.

Ultimately a softener system is the only thing to tackle it (we have ultra hard water too - feel your pain) and we had to bite the bullet and get one. Sorry about that...not much help as we don't have the actual 'hydroflow' but we did try many other things like the magnet and electric thing I mentioned earlier.

Thank you - thats food for thought! yes it is the magnet thingy. But you have confirmed what I Was suspecting - that the full on water softener is the way forward!

Actually the man at the gas company was leading you down the right path. The hydropath unit does not require any compromising of water lines and will descale all built up limescale within your pipes for hundreds of meters throughout the house. It will also descale your dishwasher and heater unit as well as your washing machine. It is totally green so unlike a water softerner it will not add salt to your drinking water--important for those with coronary conditions. The unit is NOT like a magnet unit which ONLY works when water is flowing in the house(aproximately 2 hours total a day) it keeps on sending sound waves throughout the home 24/7. There is no better or more economical solution when applied to a combi boiler. In short the Hydropath (UK) or Hydrocare (US) is the best way to go. With a 1 year guarantee or your money back how can you not take the plunge. The initial energy savings per home in US is about $1200 USD as it will remove limescale form the water heaters and dishwashers and washing machine and pipes improving energy efficiency and better water pressure. I endorse this product.
