Decorator booked to paint lounge and 1 wall in Dining room, he also booked to do papering in bedrooms. He charges by the day,he did the 1 wall and the lounge but left early yesterday (leaving my back door wide open) when i was picking up dd3.He said everything was wet and had to wait for it to dry, but when i got home only the door frame was wet.
Anyway he came back today, painted another coat on the dining room wall, and did another gloss coat.I asked him which room he was going to paper seeing as he was almost finished glossing and he said i aint starting that now, im going away tomorrow;
He just left me with a bill for 3 days of work when he only did 2 days and left after 3 hrs today.
Im a bit peeved really as he could have done at least one of the rooms that needed papering( they are only feature walls that need doing)
But im really not very gd at arguing with builders/painters etc.

Personnally, I think he's taking the piss.

bibbitybobbityhat · 28/04/2010 11:21

He is absolutely definitely taking the piss. How many hours has he worked? Calculate that as a percentage of a full day (lets say 8 hours is a day), pay him that and get someone else in to finish the job for a fixed price.

potplant · 28/04/2010 11:21

Charging for 3 days work and only doing 2 and bit is taking the piss.

msrisotto · 28/04/2010 11:27

He's taking the piss. Tell him you won't be needing his services anymore and pay him for the hours he worked.

You can get painter/decorators with reputations from previous jobs bidding for your job on ratedpeople.com and mybuilder.com

My decorator is currently doing the dining room - he arrives at 8.30 and leaves at 5.30 and is always busy. If he's not actaully working in the dining room then he's touching up woodwork etc elsewhere in the house, which is quite right if he's charging by the day.

Erm he's deffo taking the piss. If he's charging you a day rate he should be putting in a full days work. If he wants to charge you a price for the job lot then he can leave when he likes. Tell him to piss off and pay him for the hours he's worked.

Our decorater did this and we just told him not to come back

Thanks,i thought he was.DH is working overseas at the mo and im trying to sort everything out.Just phoned DH and had a rant, DH said pay him 2 days and he will call him after and have a go(i hate being stuck in the house with pissed off workmen) so i dont have to see him.
I got this guy from Check-a-trade, used him before. He did leave early last time too but only by 2hrs and i didnt have other work that needed doing so cant complain about that.

i had a massive dispute with a decorator a few years ago. to cut a long story short he spend all day in the local pub while i was at work and the work he did was rubbish. i spoke to trading standards and they advised me not to pay him. i sent him a recorded delivery letter stating that he either repairs the shit work within 2 weeks or he was not getting paid. he did not reply so i got another decorator to sort it out. never heard anything from the first guy. ring trading standards they are so helpful and will tell you how to deal with this and cover your own back at the same time

Totallyfloaty35 · 28/04/2010 15:19

He is now telling DH that as he couldnt go onto another job and he finished the painting he has to charge full day rate.He also said it was for primer(he didnt use any) undercoat(he used my paint watered down) and satin wood(the smallest tin) which makes that paint about 100quid! he also says he had to use sugar soap so i have to pay for that i thought you washed walls down anyway as a decorator.
Am furious now.
