Use mybuilder.com with caution!

I don't know if you are aware of this website mybuilder.com, it's a site where tradesmen advertise and they get feedback from jobs they have done in order to increase the potential clients confidence that they will be hiring a decent tradesman who isn't a cowboy.

I put an advert up a while ago looking for a builder and arranged one to come out to meet me but he never bothered turning up and didn't even call me. I couldn't leave negative feedback cos I hadn't 'hired' him yet. At the time, I looked at his feedback and someone else that week left him negative feedback as he didn't bother turning up for a job they'd booked him in for. So his feedback was less than 100%. But I just went on to the site there a month or so later and his feedback is back at 100% and the negative comment has mysteriously disappeared!!!

So don't rely on the feedback! Not a very good website IMHO as it really could be cowboys you're hiring.

My mum was saying something similar about these sort of websites.

She ended up going to the local trading standards as they can give impartial advice and sway you away from dodgy companies.

I agree, I hired someone, work okay, gave him a good feed back, but later something happened, and I needed to revise feed back could not do so.
Do not use any of them.

A builder I spoke to said not to use then as it's people who are more handyman than specialist. Also one that came out suggested a way to do things which would definitely fix our problem, which we found out later definitely wouldn't.

I think all situations can be as easily applied to builders found in a different way. I can see a new post on various forums almost every week describing nightmares people go through mainly with extenstions or loft conversions using builders that came highly recommended. I think this is just nature of the business. I used my builder and so far experience was not too bad but I guess it is because I apply extra caution

I'm currently speaking to a builder I got from mybuilder.
I will do my homework if we do engage his services. He has already said I can go and see a few previous jobs he has recently completed.
I will check he is solvent by going on the gov website and checking his company.
Builders that have been recommended won't even quote because they are so busy so I've decided to try the my builder website.

Any decent tradesperson does not use sites like these to canvas for work. Word of mouth is enough

Electrilux · 19/12/2019 08:41

I'd like to see you start a business without using all the available tools to help you become successful

Electrilux · 19/12/2019 08:43

This is utter rubbish for electrician like myself they insist they you provide all qualifications and insurances.. We are not handymen all reviews are 100%on my profile because I earnt them

Appletreehouse · 19/12/2019 09:16

We've used this a lot over the past 4 years and mostly had good experiences, sometimes it's the only way we could have had work done as it's so hard to find anyone willing to come out for jobs as it's so busy where we are and I like that we can message them on the app without giving our number out first.

I'd say be cautious of people with only a few review as they've not got the proven track record, and we always take note of how they respond to poor feedback, some of the tradesmen are really rude back in their comments, so God knows what they would be like in real life.
Like any trade we get them out to quote go person as some will only give an estimate over messenger or ask you to send them photos, fair enough for a tiny handyman type job but not something like a bathroom fit. You can get a feel for them in real life too.

We also had a really bad experience with some electricians who made a mess then tried to bully and harass my husband into paying extra and cash only, then insisted it be paid into one of their girlfriends accounts (also turned up in a Highways maintenance van so presumably were using work equipment on the sly). They got quite scary and to be honest we just opted out of reviewing as we were intimidated and worried they might come back as they had our address (we are soft though!)

I've used it a few times and had good experiences.

More concerned at the amount of cowboy customers on mybuilder than the traders.

Jennick · 09/10/2023 13:30

My builder is used by scammers, ours is still on the site and cost us ten thousand pounds😕

Jennick · 10/10/2023 06:45

It's true how they respond to negative feed back is very telling, our cowboy says they they are on drugs and not to. Work for them, It's like name calling at the playground.
