Draining Grooves in Granite

Planning the last details of our new kitchen and I've heard that draining grooves are pretty useless in draining the water away. I've also seen where you can get the whole sink/drainer area recessed and then have grooves put in that. What are peoples thoughts ? I'm really not wating to go for a traditonal ( sit on-top) sink unit.....

They are a bit rubbish as a stand alone feature but our kitchen man did recess the granite around the kitchen sink which does seem to work.
