Can you help me with paint colours?

I'm hopeless at this. I am redecorating my open plan living/kitchen/dining areas. I am thinking of painting the kitchen cabinets the Dulux colour Bleached Lichen(3). There are a couple of plain oak wall units which will not be painted and also oak flooring.
My question is, should the kitchen walls be painted a lighter colour or a darker colour than the cabinets? And should the dining / living walls be a different colour to the kitchen walls? I hear people always saying use a different colour to define the different functional areas. But don't want it to look ill thought out. The kitchen is south-west facing, but can be a bit gloomy because of houses opposite blocking out light. Thanks for any advice.
